The
biggest question that the teenage webmaster Tim McCall is asked about
this website is "Why?". A valid question. Why would any
young person want to make a website about a twenty-eight year-old
shipwreck? Well, the answer to that question is why this page is
titled "Presentation."
This website originally came about as an extension to a school project
when Tim McCall, the webmaster, was fourteen years old and in the eighth
grade (2000). Everyone in the eighth grade at Tim's former middle school,
under the direction of teachers Linda Gagyi, Scott Coffey, Ryan Nickoli,
William Moore, and Kathy Karlander were required to do projects on different disasters in
history. Tim was assigned to the Edmund Fitzgerald. The
assignment was to make presentations sharing research, information, and
different multimedia presentation items. You were also required to
create a booklet of twenty pages, sharing the most important facts about
the disaster you were assigned.
The funny story behind the website is that it was an idea thought of
when Tim McCall was half asleep, not realizing the huge task he would be
creating for himself. After getting hardly any sleep one night, a
night close to the due date for his project, he woke up and said
"Why not make a website?!" He knew nothing about
websites, but there he sat, at his computer, creating one. He
hoped it would be a place to compile his research, and a place to teach
others about the tragedy. It became a huge success within a couple
months. Not to mention, he got an "A" on his school
project!
The website originally started with ten pages, and through his contact
with the families of the crew, his web design skills, and his
determination in making sure the Fitz be remembered, S.S. Edmund
Fitzgerald Online has grown to over one hundred twenty-five web pages,
and is one of the most reliable and extensive sources of
information on the Fitz anywhere on the internet.
