Gordon F. MacLellan was the youngest of 6 children. He was single and had
just built an A-frame home in Presque Isle, Michigan. He had spent less
than a month in his new home before taking that last voyage on the
Fitzgerald.
His father, Donald MacLellan, was a Master Captain on the Great Lakes
who had traveled the route taken by the Edmund Fitzgerald several times.
Though his father was a captain, Gordon was the only child that took to sailing on the ships.
Gordon MacLellan was on the Edmund Fitzgerald for 5 years and worked as
a wiper. He was
short and stocky, and always had a smile on his face. He also loved hot
dogs. He had gone to school to become a pastry chef, so he could make
some desserts, too. Gordon's parents lived in Clearwater, Florida at the time
of the wreck and he was building
his home in Presque Isle, so he would travel back and forth between
traveling on the Fitzgerald.
