"Twenty-Nine" and "The Legend of Twenty-Nine Men" Poems commemorative visitor submissions to SSEFO
"Twenty-Nine" by Rick Pennock dedicated to the Rafferty Family and the crew of the Fitz
From the great depths. Emerged a story, about a few good men. They gave everything they had, Just so our lives would be, a little bit better. Reaching out with there hearts They helped a small piece of the world to be a better one.
From Cook, Captain to Cadet, sacrifice was shared by all. Though the years have passed, our memories have not faded. You are not forgotten in our hearts, minds, and souls. Our respect belongs to you the crew of Twenty Nine. You are what this nation is all about. Sacrificing your lives so we all could have a better one in the end.
"The Legend of Twenty-Nine Men" by Mike Larkins dedicated to the families of the crew
It started in 1975, When the Edmund Fitzgerald took a dive.
She is not a submarine, but an ore carrier you see, To most the way she went down is still a mystery.
Twenty-nine men, her captain and crew, all knew their jobs, and what they had to do.
All had sailed the big lake before, They knew of the dangers that might be in store.
The weather on Superior can change in a flash, Be calm one second, then a real mish-mash.
It can also be like a woman scorned, When done it can leave things tattered and torn.
The storm that arose was like none could remember, That was the fateful storm that day in November.
Twenty-nine men now rest in Superior's cold waters, Leaving behind mothers, fathers, wives, sons, and daughters.
Some families have moved on, others still grieve, Some want to forget that terrible eve.
Twenty-nine names that mark empty graves,
Twenty-nine men that are part of a mystery,
The Edmund Fitzgerald is part of legendary lore,
"The legend lives on..." Gordon Lightfoot wrote in his song,
